According to the Bible, Hell is a place originally designed by God for placement of Satan (the Devil) and fallen angels (demons). The Devil was an angel who rebelled against God, and has been condemned to the Lake of Fire. He is described as hating all humanity and creation. He is father of lies and a great deceiver. Jesus Christ said of him:
"...He was a murderer from the beginning and has always hated the truth. There is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies."
(The Holy Bible - John 8:44)
Hell is an irrevocable and eternal place of separation from God where there are torments, principally fire. Fire is not the only tormentor, thirst being another, and more. Hell will be the final dwelling place of the Devil and those who have been deceived by him.
"Then the Devil, who betrayed them, was thrown into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. And I saw a great white throne, and I saw the one who was sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God's throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to the things written in the books, according to what they had done. The sea gave up the dead in it, and death and the grave gave up the dead in them. They were all judged according to their deeds. And death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death-the lake of fire. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire."
(The Holy Bible - Revelation 20:10-15)
For God did not spare even the angels when they sinned; he threw them into hell, in gloomy caves and darkness until the judgment day.
(The Holy Bible - 2 Peter 2:4)
Hell is described by many other symbols in the Bible: "outer darkness", "abyss", "lake of fire", "eternal fire." Reality is more severe than the earthly symbols that represent them. Jesus Christ spoke about Hell more than any other person in the Bible:
"You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way. But the gateway to life is small, and the road is narrow, and only a few ever find it."
(The Holy Bible - Matthew 7:13-14)
"Don't be afraid of those who want to kill you. They can only kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell."
(The Holy Bible - Matthew 10:28)
Why do Humans go to Hell?
The Bible also refers to Hell as a place after death in which a person's soul will suffer eternal consequences for the immoral actions in their life. These immoral actions are called sin. An individual's soul will suffer God's holy wrath by receiving this eternal judgment, thus being separated from God.
Humans were never meant to die. Death is not a natural part of life, but was a consequence of sin after the first humans, Adam and Eve disobeyed God so that mankind could not live forever. Sin is what condemns us to hell and forever separates us from God.
Sin is a term used mainly to describe an act that violates a moral rule or the state of having committed such a violation. According to the Bible, the code of conduct is determined by God. Any thought, word, or act considered immoral, shameful or harmful is "sinful." Since their is no sin in heaven with Holy God, those considered sinful are condemned.
The alternative to Hell is a place called Heaven. You can go back to the main page to study Heaven.
